Deconstruction

Deconstructionism, also known as poststructuralism, stems from structuralism and generally challenges the conceived way of thought in Western philosophy since the 17th century. Structuralism seeks to discover how a system works. The theory assumes that there are characteristics that can be noted on inferred on the surface level are also rooted into a deeper organization. This idea was slightly altered to deconstruction through the use of language in order to convey an idea or thought that is not on the surface of the literary piece of work. Inference is in the hands of the reader, and similar to Readers-Response, different interpretations can be made form the same literary work. Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) examined language diachronically which means understanding how the current words has developed into what it is today. Saussure’s ideas explained that language itself is a system of signs composed of two parts: the signifier and the signified. Then this concept was extended, called semiotics, by Charles Sanders Pierce that extended the principles to the study of sign systems in general and the way meanings are derived. Deconstruction arose in the late 1960’s by readers noticing gaps in literature. French philosopher, Jaques Derrida (1930-2004), is attributed to being the originator of the theory followed by her precursors Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger. Derrida explains the idea of transcendental signified and logocentric, phonocentrism and metaphysics of presence. These ideas proclaim the fact that there is no binary or objective truth but rather any center of an idea can be altered.
