The social turmoil of the 1960s allowed a new generation of professors who represented all types of minorities to start liberating voices that were not part of the majority. Stephen Greenblatt is considered the founder of new historicism as he used the term in the introduction of the journal, Genre, in 1982. When he began publishing articles questioning the connection between literature and culture, he attracted others who would be known as the early new historicists. They were influenced by Nietzsche who rejected the idea that absolute truths or objective knowledge existed. Instead, he discovered that what is considered truth is what has already been presented as truth by those in positions of power. The new historicists were also influenced by Michael Foucault who claimed that what is accepted as truth changes and looked for topics and people that had not been valued. New Historicism critics deny that anyone can ever know exactly what happened at a given place and time or that there is ever a single unified worldview at a given time. All that can be perceived is what has been handed down in artifacts and stories which make history a narration instead of simply observations. The narration is colored by the cultural context of the recorder which most often happens to be a person of power. Therefore, there are untold stories of the powerless. A new historicism critic would want to hear all the stories and would take into account the different perspectives. They do not claim to have the truth but know that it is culturally contingent. As a result of new historicists believing that history has no goals, they realize the role literature plays in our dynamic, ever changing culture.
